DESCRIPTION
The SP2526A device is a dual +3.0V to +5.5V USB Supervisory Power Control Switch idealfor self-powered and bus-powered Universal Serial Bus (USB) applications. Each switch haslow on-resistance (110mΩ typical) and can supply 500mA minimum. The fault currents arelimited to 1.0A typical and the flag output pin for each switch is available to indicate faultconditions to the USB controller. The thermal shutdown feature will prevent damage to thedevice when subjected to excessive current loads. The undervoltage lockout feature willensure that the device will remain off unless there is a valid input voltage present.

APPLICATION INFORMATION
Error Flag
An open-drained output of an N-channelMOSFET, the FLG output is pulled low tosignal the following fault conditions: inputundervoltage, output current limit, and thermalshutdown.
Current Limit
The current limit threshold is preset internally. It protects the output MOSFET switches fromdamage resulting from undesirable short circuitconditions or excess inrush current, which isoften encountered during hot plug-in. The lowlimit of the current limit threshold of theSP2526A allows a minimum current of 0.6Athrough the MOSFET switches. A current limitcondition will signal the error flag.
Thermal Shutdown
When the chip temperature exceeds 135ºC forany reason other than overcurrent fault of eitherone of the two MOSFETs, the thermal shut-down function turns off both MOSFET switchesand signals the error flag. A hysteresis of 10ºCprevents the MOSFETs from turning back onuntil the chip temperature drops below 125ºC.However, if thermal shutdown is triggered bychip temperature rise resulting from overcurrentfault condition of either one of the MOSFETswitches, the thermal shutdown function willonly turn off the switch that is in overcurrentcondition and the other switch can still remainits normal operation. In other words, the ther-mal shutdown function of the two switches isindependent of each other in the case ofovercurrent fault.
Supply Filtering
A 0.1µF to 1µF bypass capacitor from IN toGND, located near the device, is strongly recom-mended to control supply transients. Without abypass capacitor, an output short may causesufficient ringing on the input (from supply leadinductance) to damage internal control circuitry.Transient Requirements
USB supports dynamic attachment (hot plug-in)of peripherals. A current surge is caused by theinput capacitance of downstream device. Ferritebeads are recommended in series with all powerand ground connector pins. Ferrite beads reduceEMI and limit the inrush current during hot-attachment by filtering high-frequency signals.Short Circuit Transient
Bulk capacitance provides the short-term tran-sient current needed during a hot-attachment event.A 33 µF,16V tantalum or a 100µF,10V electro-lytic capacitor mounted close to downstream con-nector each port should provide transient dropprotection
Printed Circuit Layout
The Power circuitry of USB printed circuit boardsrequires a customized layout to maximize ther-mal dissipation and to minimize voltage drop andEMI.
