The Intelligent Transport team at Newcastle University have turned an electric car into a mob ile laboratory named “DriveLAB” in order to understand the challenges faced by older drivers an d to discover where the key stress points are.
Research shows that giving up driving is one of the key reasons for a fall in health and well-b eing among older people, leading to them becoming more isolated(隔绝) and inactive.
Led by Professor Phil Blythe, the Newcastle team are developing in-vehicle technologies fo r older drivers which they hope could help them to continue driving into later life.
These include custom-made navigation(导航) tools, night vision systems and intelligent spee
d adaptations. Phil Blyth
e explains: \"For many older people, particularly those living alone or in th
e country, driving is important for preserving their
independence, giving them the freedom to get o ut and about without having to rely on others.\"
\"But we all have to accept that as we get older our reactions slow down and this often result s in people avoiding any potentially challenging driving conditions and losing confidence in thei r driving skills. The result is that people stop driving before they really need to.\"
Dr Amy Guo, the leading researcher on the older driver study, explains: \"The DriveLAB is h elping us to understand what the key stress points and difficulties are for older drivers and how w e might use technology to
address these problems.\"
\"For example, most of us would expect older drivers always go slower than everyone else, bu t surprisingly we found that in 30mph zones they struggled to keep at a constant speed and so wer e more likely to break the speed limit and be at risk of getting fined. We're looking at the benefit s of systems which control their speed
as a way of preventing that.\"
\"We hope that our work will help with technological solutions to ensure that older drivers sta y safer behind the wheel.\"

D.Read the passage and answer the questions(根据短文内容回答问题):(共12分)Over the last 25 years, British society has changed a great deal or at least many parts of it have. In some ways, however, very little has changed, particularly where attitudes are concerned. Ideas about social class --- whether a person is “working class” or “middle class” are one area in
which changes have been extremely slow.
In the past, the working class tended to be paid less than middle-class people, such as teachers and doctors. As a result of this and also of t he fact that workers’ jobs were generally much less secure, evident differences in lifestyles and attitudes came into existence. The typical working man would collect his wages on Friday evening and then, it was widely believed, having given his wife her “housekeeping”, would go out and squander (挥霍) the rest on beer and betting.
The old style of what a middle-class man did with his money was perhaps nearer the truth. He was --- and still is --- tended to take a longer-term view. Not only did he regard buying a house as a most important thing , but he also considered the education of his children as extremely important. Both of these provided him and his family with security. Only in very few cases did workers have the opportunity ( or the education and training ) to make such long-term plans.
Nowadays, a great deal has changed. In a large number of cases factory workers earn as much, if not more, than their middle-class administrators. Social security and laws have made it less necessary than before to w orry about “tomorrow”. Working class people seem slowly to be losing the feeling of inferiority(自卑)they had in the past. In fact there has been a growing tendency in the past few years for the middle classes to feel slightly ashamed of their position.
The changes in both lifestyles and attitudes are probably most easily seen among younger people. They generally tend to share very similar tastes in music and clothes; they spend their money in having a good time, and save for holidays or longer-term plans when necessary. There seems to be much less
difference than in precious generations. Nevertheless, we still have a wide gap between the well-paid (whatever the type of job they may have) and the low-paid. As long as this gap exists, there will always be a possibility that new conflicts and jealousies will arise, or rather that the old conflicts will re-appear, but between different groups.
