Have you ever noticed the black and white bars on a book? Do you know what they are used for?

They are barcodes(条形码)used in most products. If you go to a supermarket, you can see almost every product with a barcode on it. Barcodes have information about the products, such as name and production date. It’s an easy and convenient way to know about the products. Just scan the barcodes and everything is clear.

The first use of a barcode in a supermarket checkout system was on a bag of American Wrigley Company toys in 1974. Besides supermarkets, barcodes are needed everywhere: for renting cars, for luggage(行李)checks on a plane, for parcels(包裹) you send. Life would be rather difficult without barcodes. Most of our things would get lost in the post.

Barcodes change as well. Barcodes in the past were 1-D ( one-dimensional), but now there are 2-D barcodes such as QR code. Since 2009, QR has been used on Chinese train tickets. People can enter stadiums, cinemas and theaters by holding certain kinds of barcodes. With these small codes, life is getting much easier for us.

If you find these barcode things boring, a barcode building might make your street modern and interesting. In St. Petersburg, Russia, there is a building designed like a barcode. It looks

strange, but it's actually a shopping mall. There are games, too. Barcode Monsters is a mobile phone game. You have to scan barcodes and find the monsters! 61. The underlined word \"scan\" might mean _______ in Chinese.

请阅读下面这篇关于儿童版《红楼梦》的文章,根据所提供的信息,回答下面的问题。

The famous writer, Liu Xinwu, release(出版) the child-friendly version(版本) of A Dream of Red Mansions《红楼梦》. A Dream of Red Mansions is one of China’s four greatest classical novels. Many Chinese parents would like to give the novel to their children to read, but it’s very difficult for children to understand it. With the child-friendly version published, the young readers can understand it easily. What Liu did in the six books was to focus on the characters, the scenes and the related stories, like Daiyu burying flowers and Miaoyu serving tea. Liu said, “I try my best to bring the beautiful, pleasant and interesting things from the novel to young readers. I give the kids the light and joy that the book brings, which will stay with them as they grow older and can get a better understanding of the original(原著)novel themselves.” Liu’s child-friendly version of A Dream of Red Mansions was inspired by the stories he told his 6-year-old granddaughter. For years, Liu has been promoting the novel to adult readers, but now he is satisfying people’s need of taking the classical(经典) novel to even younger readers. 根据短文内容,回答下列问题。 81. I have read the novel A Dream of Red Mansions and it’s one of my favorite books because it’s

very interesting. It’s a great idea for the Youth League to hold such an activity “reading classical novels”.

To hold it smoothly, I have some advice. First of all, the Youth League are supposed to make a list of the classical novels for the students to read. What is more, it will be of great help if the teachers can give some lessons to help enjoy the reading. More importantly, some competitions are really necessary to attract the students’ interest to take part in the activities.

Reading is a good way for us to enlarge our knowledge and enrich our life. Let’s take an active part in the activity and form a good habit of reading.
