My Big Sickness and What I Learned
Hi, my name is Jamie and I'm 10 years old. A few months ago, I got really sick. It all started with a sore throat and a little cough. My mom gave me some cough syrup, but it just kept getting worse.
Soon, I had a super high fever and I was feeling really weak and achy all over. I couldn't even get out of bed. My parents had to stay home from work to take care of me. I was so miserable - my throat was on fire whenever I tried to swallow anything and I just wanted to sleep all day.
After a few days of this, my parents took me to the doctor. The doctor said I had a really bad case of strep throat and that I might need to go to the hospital if I didn't get better soon. He gave me strong antibiotics to help fight the infection. At first, the medicine didn't seem to be working. I kept feeling worse and worse. I was vomiting a lot from the throat pain. My parents were really worried about me. I overheard them saying I might have to get a special tube put in to help me eat and drink if I couldn't keep anything down.
That really scared me! I didn't want any tubes put in me. So I tried my absolute hardest to slowly sip liquids and eat little bites of soft foods whenever I could. It was so hard, but I kept at it. After about a week, I finally started feeling a little bit better each day.
Eventually, the fever went away and my throat stopped hurting so much. I was able to eat normal foods again, which was great because I was so sick of soup and Popsicles! It took me a while to get all my energy and strength back, but I was just so happy and relieved to be feeling better.
This sickness was honestly one of the worst experiences of my life so far. I had never felt so crummy and miserable for such a long period of time before. But I learned a few really important lessons from going through it:
Don't take your health for granted! Before I got sick, I kind of took it for granted that I could just run around and play and do whatever I wanted everyday without issues. This experience showed me how quickly that can change, and how horrible it feels to be really sick. It made me realize that being healthy is such a blessing that we should be thankful for.
Listen to your parents and doctors. When you're sick, they honestly do know what's best for you, even if the medicine tastes
bad or you don't feel like following their instructions. If I hadn't listened and tried so hard to get liquids and soft foods in me, I might have ended up with that scary tube. It's important to follow their advice.
Don't give up. There were times when I felt so miserable that I didn't think I would ever get better again. But I kept trying little by little each day, and eventually I beat the sickness. If I had just given up, I might have gotten worse instead of better. Having that positive mindset and perseverance paid off in the end. Appreciate your caregivers. My mom and dad were absolute heroes throughout my whole sickness. They stayed up with me, made sure I took my medicine, helped me try to eat and drink, and just did everything they could to make me more
comfortable. I don't know what I would have done without them by my side. Families and caregivers are so important, especially when you're ill.
Have patience. Getting over a serious sickness is a slow process. There were days I thought I was finally better, and then I would crash again and feel awful. It's a roller coaster, but the key is being patient and not getting discouraged. Taking it day by day is important. Gradually, with time and care, you'll get there.
So even though being that sick was absolutely no fun at all, I'm kind of grateful for the experience now looking back. It helped me learn lessons about health, perseverance,
appreciating others, and having patience that I might not have really understood otherwise. I hope I don't get that sick again anytime soon, but if I do, I'll be better prepared mentally and emotionally to get through it.
I hope my story can help other kids who go through similar experiences. Being sick is tough, but you've got to stay positive and strong, and appreciate the people in your life who are there to help you get better. Trust me, you'll get there! Those are the biggest lessons I learned from my big sickness.
