intelligent woman, though she is selfish and willful. 6.Environment

1) Can you think of some environmental problems facing us today? What are they? There are many environmental problems facing us today: air pollution, water pollution, acid rain, sandstorm, rainforest destruction, global warming etc. 2) Describe sandstorm and offer the way to deal with it. Useful expressions:

/Each spring a big sandstorm strikes the city. /The air is filled with sand and dust.

7. Education

1) Do you have any ideas about how to be a good student?

Different people have different opinions about how to be a good student. As for me, I think a good student should have at least three important qualities.

First, a good student should be very diligent in his study. He will spend a lot of time in studying, and the more he studies, the more he will improve his knowledge. A great man once said, “Genius is nothing but labor and diligence.”

Second, to cultivate one’s own virtue is also very important. A good student should be honest, warmhearted, and always ready to help others.

Third, a strong body is essential for being a good student. Anyone who has not a strong body can do nothing great for his country, even if he is very bright and intelligent.

2) Do you think environment has had more influence on you than heredity?

Yes. I think environment has more influence on me than heredity. Maybe heredity has also played a part. My parents are both well-educated and they both have a successful career. Maybe that’s why I always feel easy to learn my lessons. But hard working is more important. I’ve always been a diligent student. I ask myself to do everything carefully and be responsible for everything I do. That’s why I have academic success and I am still able to develop my other talents as in music. And my success should be contributed largely to hard working. 3) What do you think is the purpose of school education?

It’s true that children go to school to learn their own language, other languages, arithmetic, geography, history, science and all the other subjects. But why do they learn these things? Children are sent to school to prepare themselves for the time when they will grow up and will have to work for themselves. Nearly all they study at school has some practical use in their life.

There is more in education than just learning facts. We go to school above all to learn how to learn, so that when we have left school we can continue to learn. A man who really knows how to learn will always be successful, because whenever he has to do something new, he will rapidly teach himself how to do it in the best way. The uneducated person, on the other hand, is unable to do something new, or does it badly. The purpose of schools, therefore, is not just to teach pupils various subjects, but to teach pupils the way to learn.

1) How do the three elements (online, book and classroom) relate to each other? About 2-3 hours a week studying English online.

3) What material do you usu. cover when studying English online? 4) Do you benefit from online English learning? And how?

9. College English teaching reform

1) Are you in favor of college English teaching reform? Why or why not?

2) With the new teaching model people can learn English from computers. The computer brings many advantages. What do you think are the main benefits that the computer brings to English learning? There are five main benefits:

a) presenting authentic spoken American English in a vivid and memorable

way to students with little or no exposure to native speakers, and who are studying in an entirely Chinese-speaking environment.

b) enabling students to practice using and repeating the new phrases and

expressions they have learned in a safe, private and totally non-threatening

environment.

c) enabling students to work at their own pace and their own convenience,

without the time and other restrictions and imposed by classes running according to fixed timetables.

d) enabling students to assess their own progress and performance, so as to

become more effective and efficient learners, able to direct their own learning process.

e) enabling teachers to monitor students’ progress and performance, so as to

provide academic reporting, and, if desired, guidance to students to help them make the best use of their time studying.

4) Are there any problems you have met with in adjusting to the new teaching

model? What are they?

10. New teaching approaches

What new teaching approaches are you most interested in? 1) pair work, group work, role play, word games, etc.;

Take group work for example. Group work is a cooperative activity: five students, perhaps, discussing a topic, doing a role-play or solving a problem. In groups, students tend to participate more equally, and they are also more able to use English than they are in a whole-class arrangement. 2) pictures, English films, video;

Take video for example. Video is richer than audio tape. Speakers can be seen. Their body movements give clues as to meaning, so do the clothes they wear, their location etc. Background information can be filled in visually.

3) a PC-based or campus-network-based multimedia listening and speaking

4) the teaching of reading, writing and translation conducted either in the classroom or online.
