1. A friend of yours is looking for a new place to live and has asked for your advice. What do you think is the most important characteristic of a good neighborhood? Use details and examples to explain your answer.
I think the most important characteristic of a good neighborhood is environment. Firstly, the natural environment is very important. If you live in a place full of sunshine and trees and flowers surround it, you’ll feel happy. A good mood will give positive influence on many aspects of your life. Secondly, social environment is equally important. If the people in the environment are friendly, you won’t have any trouble with people making noise or people stealing things. You will feel safe and helpful.
2. Do you agree or disagree with the following statement?
Parents should be involved in the process of helping their children to choose a career.
Use specific examples and details to support your opinion.
I don’t agree with the statement. I think, when it comes to choosing a career, parents had better step aside and let children make their own decisions because, at this stage of life, children already know what they want to do. They want to be independent not just economically but psychologically as well. They usually don’t like other people’s advices about choosing a career, especially their parents’ advice. Sometimes they even deliberately avoid parents’ choice. They want to
prove that they can survive independent of their parents. So helping children choose a career will actually be counterproductive.
3. The woman expresses her opinion about the student's proposal. Briefly summarize the proposal. Then state her opinion about the proposal and explain the reasons she gives for holding that opinion.
The writer proposes that campus construction should take place in the summer because construction projects are disruptive and it’ll be faster to finish the projects in the summer. The girl totally agrees with the proposal and its two reasons. Firstly, she says that last year, four parking lots were closed because of construction. There was not enough space. So students had to look for parking space in the streets and they would be late for classes. Secondly, it did take longer time to finish the construction project in the winter. The last year’s construction took so long because it was in the winter. It had a big snowstorm. The project had to stop several times.
4. Explain how the example from the lecture illustrates the concept of emotional intelligence.
Emotional intelligence enables people to know the true causes of their feelings. It helps them control their emotions so they can maintain good relationships. In the lecture, the professor uses his daughter as an example. In the example, his daughter argued with her friend over which movie to watch. She was
upset. But she realized that the thing that made her upset is actually her new job. She just got a job to teach little kids but she had no experience. So she apologized to her friend and said sorry. And her friend comforted her and gave her encouragement. Then they became good as usual. It’s clear that the professor’s daughter had the ability to understand the true cause of her feeling and had a good control over her emotion.
5. Briefly summarize the problem the speakers are discussing. Then state which of the two solutions from the conversation you would recommend. Explain the reasons for your recommendation.
The woman is waiting for her friend Amy. But Amy is already late. They were supposed to drive to the town to watch a movie 15 minutes ago. The woman can either wait another ten minutes or just leave the Amy and go by herself. If I were the woman, I would just go by myself. First of all, being late is not a good manner even to friends. Amy is always late and there gives no response to messages and calls. Waiting for Amy will only encourage her bad habit of being late. So it’s proper to just leave her and give her a lesson even if she had given forewarning about being late. Plus, the professor wants them to watch the movie and they will discuss it in the class. If the woman waits ten more minutes, she will miss the beginning. This is not good for her study.
6. Using the example of the lizard from the lecture, explain two benefits of subsurface locomotion.
The professor talks about two benefits of subsurface locomotion. The first benefit is minimizing exposure to extreme temperatures. For example, it’s very dangerous to walk on the surface in the Sahara desert. There is a kind of lizard that can move beneath the sand. It does not travel on the surface so it can avoid high temperature in the harsh climate. The second benefit of subsurface locomotion is capturing prey. For example, when insects are walking on the surface, they produce vibrations in the sand. When the lizard senses the vibrations, it moves underground toward the source of vibration. Then it can capture the insects by surprise.
