定语从句是一个相对的句子成分。如果从句中的谓语动词为动词短语（phrasal verb），这个短语就不能拆开，以保证语义表达的准确性。例：
I'm going to read the book that you were talking about last night.
上面的句子中 that you were talking about last night 是定语从句，修饰 the book。其中 talking about 是动词词组，不宜拆开。由于先行词 the book 同时在从句中是 talking about 的介词宾语，即 you were talking about the book last night。有人会问，可不可以写成
I'm going to read the book, about which you were talking last night.
回答是：语法上没问题，但现在估计不会有人这么说话——不仅啰嗦，而且还故作风雅咬文嚼字。因此，很多英语老师会告诫学生你上面问题中的话。
